WHY DOES UNDERLYING WATER OR MOISTURE CAUSE PAINT TO DELAMINATE. 

  • After researching this topic for many years we confident to conclude that water or moisture is only the carrier for a chemical procedure that causes paint to delaminate.
  • Without elaborating on the technical and scientific issues pertaining to this statement, we wish to summarize as follows:
  • Capillaries are created by movement of water or moisture during hydration.
  • The movement of water or moisture in a substrate is influenced by gravity and / or capillary action.
  • This movement may be in all directions via the capillaries within the substrate.
  • Water or moisture always follows the capillaries with least resistance. 
  • Some capillaries lead to the surface when the water or moisture is released into the atmosphere.
  • Paint companies claim that paint allows for breathing, therefore water or moisture will pass through the paint film.
  • During water or moisture movement, it also carries with it Calcium Hydroxide from within the substrate. This chemical occurs during manufacture of Portland cement, and is also a natural substance in sand, clay and clay bricks.
  • This chemical of alkaline nature is dense and unable to penetrate the paint film where it is trapped between the substrate and the paint film.
  • Build-up of this salt eventually “push” the film off the substrate resulting in delamination hence paint failure.
  • This symptom is known as efflorescence. 

 

WHAT IS “PCT X-TREME”.

“PCT X-TREME” is not a paint, but a viscous liquid chemical which, when applied by brush or roller to a wet cementitious surface (or brick for that matter), it will react with inherent Calcium Hydroxide to form a negative and positive hydrophobic insoluble inorganic water repellent barrier.

A crystalline structure is visible on the surface soon after application.

 

HOW DOES “PCT X-TREME” WORK.

“PCT X-TREME”, as previously mentioned, is a chemical product to restrict the movement of water or moisture when applied to wet cementitious surfaces and bricks by brush or roller.

This is achieved as follows:

  • Calcium Hydroxide Ca(OH)2 with PH 12-13, the main chemical that leads to efflorescence, is conveyed to the surface during the process of hydration.
  • When it is subjected to atmospheric gases it reacts with Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere to become Calcium Carbonate CaCo3.
  • “PCT X-TREME” is applied to the wet surface when Calcium Hydroxide is in transition before reacting with Carbon Dioxide.
  • Both “PCT X-TREME” and Calcium Hydroxide require Carbon Dioxide and oxygen to complete the chemical reaction and both have similar PH values.
  • At the point before atmospheric carbons are available the products interact when carbon dioxide completes the reaction.
  • An insoluble water repellent (hydrophobic) film is created.

 

THE TARGET MARKET.

The target market will be property development, building construction, building contractors and sub-contractors, maintenance contractors and waterproofing specialists, but not restricted to. 

 

WHAT PARTICULAR PROBLEM WILL “PCT X-TREME” SOLVE.

Two major issues exist.

  1. During development construction and maintenance projects copious amounts of water is used during preparation of cement and concrete mixes. Water acts as the catalyst when added to the dry ingredients and also ensures that hydration takes place during curing.Complete cure is achieved after prolonged periods, depending on atmospheric humidity, thickness of plaster, and porosity and often result in downtime. Invariably, all projects are based on a time frame for completion. Downtime often leads to interference of the time frame. When premature painting is done to recover downtime, failures occur very soon after application. Seventy-one percent of all recorded paint failures are due to the presence of underlying water or moisture. “PCT X-TREME” will reduce downtime dramatically and prevent paint failures as it may be applied  4 hours after plastering and over coated after 6 hours.

  2. “PCT X-TREME” replaces plaster primers and undercoats and will therefore lead to dramatic savings on paint usage.

The leading paint companies all have a solvent based product for sale with claims that it has open film formation that allows water or moisture to escape through the film. What, however, happens to underlying chemical salt formation? In this regard I refer to my opening statement.

All the relevant products cure by oxidisation and is not a chemical procedure.

In comparison to “PCT X-TREME” independent research revealed that no similar product exist or is available for sale in the market.

TESTING

  • During initial stages of formulation 47 formulas were investigated. Each formulation was subjected to extreme testing. These formulas were reduced to 4 and again subjected to extreme testing to establish the best performer. Tests were conducted in the laboratory as well as atmospheric duplication.
  • In all instances test substrates were prepared with a cement mix of commercial quality 4 /1 sand and Portland cement to a thickness of 15 millimetre.

  • Paint delamination in accordance with SABS Test Method “Cross Hatch”.
